  • The Sports Geek will make daily NBA picks based off generated numbers from site’s Artificial Intelligence model
  • Goal is to finish above the mark needed for profit on a weekly basis
  • AI was also used to pick regular season NFL games in 2019

With football season coming to a close, the attention surrounding the hardwood has picked up, as NBA action is starting to truly catch stride both on the court and at the betting counter.

To reflect this increase in action pro hoops is starting to get, The Sports Geek has compiled daily NBA picks from its advanced artificial intelligence system to help all readers get a winning edge in their plays. The first group of picks was unveiled yesterday. The results are as follows:

TSG AI Pick Results – Monday (1/13)

  • 4-3 SU
  • 2-5 ATS
  • 2-4-1 O/U

With this as a starting point, the goal for these daily picks is to track the progress of our system over the course of the NBA regular season to gauge if the information and predictions being generated are accurate and profitable.

The AI will measure picks on three different accounts: straight up (SU), against the spread (ATS), and versus the total (O/U). By documenting the model’s success within these categories, a greater reflection of profit will be seen if profit winds up being found.

With the NFL AI picks, that was the case, as TSG’s weekly picks kept above water with the needed  52.4 % required to break even when betting against the number in pro football. These picks were carefully analyzed and interpreted in order to ensure the proper prediction was being generated by the model, and TSG as a result found the system to be impressively accurate in its inaugural season.

LeBron James vs Tristan Thompson

The AI aims to repeat this with the NBA, a sport that like the NFL is very much dependent on the point spread. With the NBA seeing a huge increase in betting handle and mainstream popularity over the past decade, more consumers are now looking for basketball-oriented content, especially if gambling information is present.

The Sports Geek looks to capitalize on this and while the model may not seem like an overnight success, tracking its daily progress is the only way for it to be determined efficient or not.

Same Model, Different Sports

With the AI set for its second night of activity come Tuesday, January 14th, potential bettors should keep in mind that stats carry different meaning and relevance in the NBA and NFL respectively.

NBA stats are more ambiguous to the computer model than NFL stats and with the model’s projections spawning off this statistical data, there is always a chance that the full picture is not being painted.

To counter this  however, the NBA’s volume of games on a day-by-day basis helps show a pattern since stats are being crunched more intensely and picks are generated at a more frequent rate with less down time in between( unlike in the NFL where betting opportunities are far more limited throughout the entirety of the week and AI picks would come in just once).

In other words, what was the full story in an NFL game may only be a fragment of the story in an NBA game. When looking at the numbers originating from the NBA model, added fluff that has very little to do with the contest’s outcome is incorporated in those game’s used stats.

With basketball being such a numbers-based sport, the computer puts a great deal of effort into deciphering these numbers and turning them into something that can be of value. Yet due to its format, the NBA story will be told at a far more consistent rate with greater opportunity for profit. So, while more data will be required, more of a pattern will be found to use as a gauge.

As winter rolls on and the NBA season becomes more clear-cut, the weight these AI picks carry will increase, and the results will begin to show the trends that determines this prediction model a success or not.

Until it gets to that point, however, be sure to check out TSG’s AI picks to develop an opinion for yourselves and even put some money in your pocket.
