There will be some adjustments on the number of miles required for award tickets, and a stopover is no longer allowed in Taipei on connecting itineraries.

You can access STARLUX Airlines here.

Intra-Asia Awards Round-Trip

Asia – North America Awards Round-Trip

And then policy change:

For round-trip award tickets, no stopover is allowed between the departure and the turnaround point and between the turnaround point and the destination. The country of turnaround and transfer point must differ from the departure and destination. For example, stopover in Taipei is not allowed for a round-trip ticket departing from Osaka to Bangkok via Taipei.

Conclusion

These STARLUX awards require a rather ridiculous amount of miles, and why not allow a stopover in Taipei?

They are a startup airline that needs to offer more than its main competitors, China Airlines and Eva, both also based in Taiwan and part of alliances.

You usually earn 3 IHG One Rewards points per USD; as a Business Rewards member, that is double to 6 for the duration of this offer. A maximum of 120,000 points can be earned at any single event or stay under this promotion.

You can access this offer on IHG’s website here.

READ MORE: IHG One Rewards Rate & Bonus Points Offers

Note that you must register for this offer to earn the bonus points.

Two IHG’s Examples:

If an IHG® Business Rewards member registered for the Offer has a Qualifying Spend of $5,000 USD during the Offer Period, then the member will earn a total of six (6) IHG One Rewards points for every $1 USD, totalling 30,000 points (15,000 base points + 15,000 bonus points).

If an IHG® Business Rewards member registered for the Offer has a Qualifying Spend of $20,000 USD during the Offer Period, then the member will earn a total of six (6) IHG One Rewards points for every $1 USD, totalling 120,000 Points (60,000 base points + 60,000 bonus points).

Conclusion

All hotel chains have bonus programs for Meeting and Event Planners, and IHG’s also include those that book rooms for others.

Terms and Conditions of this offer:

To be eligible for the IHG® Business Rewards 2X Points offer (“Offer”), a person must be an IHG® Business Rewards member, which includes acceptance of the IHG® Business Rewards Programme Terms and Conditions, and the member must have registered for the Offer. By clicking “register now” in connection with the promotional materials for the Offer, a member is registering for the Offer and agreeing to these Terms and Conditions. Once an IHG® Business Rewards member has registered for the Offer, the member can earn double the IHG One Rewards points on Qualifying Spend for all stays, meetings and/or events that are booked during the period from 6 September 2023 until 31 December 2023 (“Booking Period”) and completed during the period from 6 September 2023 until 30 June 2024 (“Offer Period”). Additional details on Qualifying Spend are provided below. The time needed for awarding points can vary with each promotional offer, so please allow up to 6 weeks for any earned bonus points to be posted to the recipient’s account.

For this Offer, earning “2X” or “2X points” or “double points” on stays or events booked and completed within the applicable periods as set forth above means the total number of standard “base points” and promotional “bonus points” combined will equal two (2) times the base IHG One Rewards points the member would normally receive just for being an IHG® Business Rewards member. Therefore, under this Offer, the member can earn three (3) base points for every $1 USD of Qualifying Spend and an additional three (3) bonus points for every $1 USD of Qualifying Spend, for a total of six (6) points for each $1 USD. The first three (3) base points earned are considered Elite-Qualifying Points that count towards the IHG One Rewards Elite status. The additional three (3) bonus points awarded as part of the Offer are Non-Elite Qualifying Points under the IHG One Rewards programme.

Points awarded under this Offer are based on Qualifying Spend within the Offer Period only. There is no limit on the number of stays, meetings, or events that may be booked under the Offer, but a maximum of 120,000 total points (which is the amount that would be awarded for $20,000 in Qualifying Spend) can be earned on any one qualifying stay, meeting, and/or event covered by this Offer, including all guest room bookings and other Qualifying Spend linked to such stay, meeting, and/or event. Spend for stays, meetings, and/or events that were booked outside of the Booking Period or that were not completed within the Offer Period will not qualify for 2X points under this Offer. Additional information on Qualifying Spend is available in the IHG® Business Rewards Programme Terms and Conditions.

Examples of how earning points with the Business Rewards 2X Points offer works:

Examples of points awarded under the Offer:

The airline has operated flights on behalf of other airlines (wet lease), and they will continue these operations and cargo flights.

You can access Air Belgium here.

The airline will operate scheduled flights to South Africa and Mauritius until October 2, 2023, and will rebook passengers on other airlines for their return sectors past that date. If passengers have not started their trips by October 3, they can expect to see a refund.

An Excerpt from Aviation24 (access here):

Faced with a more than unstable socio-economic and geopolitical environment and in view of the fact that an airline has to plan for cycles of 3 to 5 years, Air Belgium’s Board of Directors has taken a number of decisions to ensure the long-term viability and growth of the company which has a staff of 500 people, namely to:

1. Concentrate on the two profitable lines of business that offer growth prospects: The activities of cargo and ACMI (Aircraft, Crew, Maintenance and Insurance, or wet lease), i.e. the leasing of aircraft between airlines for passenger and cargo flights, constitute two profitable lines of business with growth prospects.

2. Discontinue the scheduled Passenger business: despite the many investments by Air Belgium in recent years and the strengthening of commercial initiatives, the Passenger business is still unprofitable. After numerous studies, Air Belgium’s Board of Directors reached the conclusion that turning a profit on this front would require substantial investments in addition to those already made in recent years, which has not been possible.

3. Initiate judicial reorganisation proceedings by way of amicable agreement to ensure the company’s long-term viability and growth and to give it time to reorganise internally around these two segments.

Conclusion

You may have seen Air Berlin planes in airports where they don’t have scheduled flights or ended up on flights they have operated on behalf of others, such as British Airways.

It is interesting to see if they can pull through the reorganization because the wet lease market won’t stay hot forever (many network carriers have been short on staff and planes after the pandemic), and there are established cargo airlines.

Aegean Miles+Bonus Air China Award Booking Limitation https://loyaltylobby.com/2023/09/19/aegean-milesbonus-air-china-award-booking-limitation/?omhide=true https://loyaltylobby.com/2023/09/19/aegean-milesbonus-air-china-award-booking-limitation/#disqus_thread Tue, 19 Sep 2023 13:38:25 +0000 https://loyaltylobby.com/?p=179879 Aegean has put out a notice that there is an issue with Air China awards that can temporarily be booked only over the phone and not on their website. I am unsure if this is an issue because Air China award availability is still coming up on their website, but I have not tried to issue a ticket (may fail).

You can access Aegean’s page for the notice here.

Aegean’s Notice:

Miles redemption on Star Alliance carriers

We would like to inform you that miles redemption on Air China flights is not available via your Miles+Bonus account at aegeanair.com and Aegean App, due to technical restrictions.

In case you are interested to proceed with redeeming your miles to book a flight with Air China, you may contact Aegean’s Call Center, at 801 11 20000 (from a fixed phone) or at (+30) 210 6261000 (from a mobile phone or from abroad, on a continuous basis, 24 hours a day, seven days a week), without a service fee.

Aegean Award Search:

Air China award space does come up.

You can also select the flights.

I proceeded to the payment screen.

Conclusion

I am surprised about this notice because I came across Air China’s availability on Aegean’s website earlier this week, and it still appears to be there.

There was business availability with another “Chinese” airline from Taipei, and I ticketed on Eva, whose business class is much better, and the lounge at its base fantastic.

You may have to call Aegean if you have trouble with Air China availability or reservation fails to ticket.

With that many planes, it’s clear that […]]]> The 78th U.N. General Assembly is held in New York City at the moment, and world leaders are once again traveling there for attendance, with most of them flying their own government aircraft rather than using commercial service.

With that many planes, it’s clear that one thing isn’t going to work out very well and that’s parking space at New York’s notoriously congested airports, so where are the world’s leaders going to park their aircraft this week?

I always found this question very interesting and thought about it years ago but this week, an old article caught my attention that outlined how pilots of these delegations often have to land in New York, drop off their passengers, and then fly sometimes hundreds of miles away to another airport where they have secured a parking spot for a couple of days.

This Business Insider article from 2021 outlines where some of the jets end up during the annual meeting.

… While leaders talk about commitments to climate change on the world stage, their government planes are burning extra jet fuel by flying empty to airports across the Northeast just to park during the event.

New York’s JFK International Airport is the preferred gateway to the UN for many visiting countries due to its proximity to Manhattan. A long-standing rule of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, however, restricts those aircraft from staying at JFK while their passengers head to the UN.

Foreign military and state aircraft are barred from staying at Port Authority airports overnight due to traffic and space constraints, a spokesperson confirmed to Insider. After they’ve landed at a Port airport, those aircraft have two hours to depart for another airport where they’ll park while in the US.

Commercial airports under the Port’s purview also include LaGuardia and Newark Liberty International.

New York Stewart International Airport in Newburgh, New York, around 60 miles north of the UN, is a popular parking spot for foreign aircraft given its large runway and parking availability for large aircraft.

Flight tracking data shows that aircraft staying in Newburgh this year included a Boeing Business Jet 747-8i of the Turkish government, Airbus A319 of the Italian government, and Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner of Biman Bangladesh Airlines, among many others.

Aircraft will travel as far as Washington, DC, nearly 200 nautical miles south of New York, just for a parking spot.

Airports closer to New York, including Farmingdale Republic Airport and Long Island MacArthur Airport are favorites of countries with smaller diplomatic aircraft. But larger aircraft, such as a Boeing 747, cannot use them or other nearby airports such as New Jersey’s Teterboro Airport and White Plains, New York’s Westchester County Airport due to runway constraints. …

The article then outlines a rather interesting itinerary of former British PM Boris Johnson back in the day:

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson took to America’s high-speed Amtrak Acela train to visit the White House while in the US. But Johnson’s plane also made the trip to the nation’s capital.

The UK version of Air Force One flew from New York to Washington Dulles International Airport in Virginia after dropping off Johnson on September 19. Had Johnson chose to fly between New York and Washington, his plane would have had to fly back to New York to pick him up, then fly back to Virginia to park.

And after Johnson’s visit, the plane would have had to fly him back to New York, only to fly back to Virginia to park for the rest of the prime minister’s UN visit, and then fly back to New York for the return flight to London.

A lot of logistics for a trip between NYC and Washington DC, taking the train was the easiest for Johnson and his entourage (including security detail) but that doesn’t mean the aircraft can be idle. It’s pretty common for delegations to also meet their U.S. liaisons in Washington during the UNGA since it saves them an extra trip sometime down the road.

As it’s well documented, the arrangements for the U.S. President are even more elaborate for out-of-town travel, though for NYC the President usually takes the Marine One Helicopter.

A report popped up in Thai Media that the new PM took a Thai Airways B787 Dreamliner to the U.S. which really surprised me as the seating is anything but comfortable (especially for a tall and broad guy like the new PM). The TG Dreamliner has no First Class configuration and only 2-2-2 in the pretty bad Business Class that was installed on it.

You can follow the plane on FlightAware, it’s about to land as I’m writing this article.

Let’s see where this Dreamliner will eventually end up being parked!?

Government / diplomatic flights are not subject to restrictions regular commercial carriers face when trying to file for a new route to the U.S. so that’s why you suddenly see a Thai Airways flight back in the U.S. which would otherwise not be possible at the moment.

Conclusion

World leaders need to find an alternative parking space in a city far away from New York this week as they visit the U.S. General Assembly. This is often a logistical puzzle as airports up and down the coast are packed with aircraft and those in NYC are already at capacity.

There might be some countries that also receive clearance for priority due to security reasons and be allowed to remain in NYC. In the past, the Saudi jet was definitely parked there, not surprising considering they own a good chunk of the whole U.S. Economy.

I was chatting about these changes with a friend of mine who has held a top-tier status first with Northwest and then Delta for some 20+ years, and asked him to write an opinion piece.

You can access Delta here.

– Guest post from Neal, a long-time friend of Loyalty Lobby

Delta’s recent decision to “streamline” their loyalty program is a slap in the face to many loyal travelers such as myself.

While the SkyMiles program has never been the reason to fly Delta, their reliability, generally better service, innovative lounges and willingness of their staff to make things right when something does go wrong has always been the reason to stick with Delta. Before the pandemic, the Diamond Medallion phone line was a wonderful resource and empowered to help, even bend rules here and there.

Not anymore. Last week’s change was sudden and drastic. Instead of incremental changes, DL announced exorbitant increases in the requirement to attain elite status as well as how you can earn it. Delta also made dramatic shifts in how you reach Million Miler levels as well as Lounge access – together a huge hit.

In my opinion, this is an overreach and pure greed on behalf of an executive team that seems to have grown more arrogant and cocky in recent years. Glen Hauenstein, Delta’s President, self-labeled Delta “America’s First Class Airline”. Sure Mr. Hauenstein deserves credit for Delta investing big money (far more than UA and AA) in its people, product and facilities – but he’s also been relentless is getting every last dollar out of customers, at the expense of it’s loyalty program.

For example: In August 2023, Delta had a domestic paid first class load factor of 74%. That means on average, 74% of first class seats were sold, and not offered as upgrades to elite members. In 2011, Delta only sold 14% of its first class seats and offered the rest as upgrades to elite members.

Such success is clearly loved by Wall Street and an ego boost to Mr. Hauenstein. But on the customer side, he is known as the architect of “SkyPesos”, a term popularized in recent years due to his push to change SkyMiles from a program that awarded miles based on revenue rather than miles flown along with the elimination of award charts, and no-notice rule changes all leading to this week’s loyalty-shattering changes.

Sure that 74% of First seats sold, shows why Delta has commanded a Premium over other US based airlines and has been getting recognition for being above average, but Mr. Hauenstein is just gaslighting customers and himself with this “America’s First Class Airline” nonsense and spin on jumps in spend required to attain elite/Medallion status without much in return to customers.

For example: this is the second year in a row that Delta raised status thresholds. Last year, they increased the spend requirement 33% for most tiers; and this year the increases are even more extreme: a whopping 75% – that is almost 133% in two years. Delta has not done anything meaningful to reward Elite members for that increase with additional perks or benefits, and as mentioned above upgrades are few and far between due to the push to sell upgrades to First/Business/Premium seats.

Conclusion

The jump in required spend from $20k to $35k for top tier status is just plain greed to me. But it’s a relief to jump off the Medallion hamster wheel in 2024, drop that DL Amex and become a free agent.

I won’t ‘quit’ Delta, in fact I estimate DL to get about 40-50% of my spend. But is that what Mr. Hauenstein, Amex and Wall Street really want?

When I try to sign up for the promo, there is an error message that my account is not eligible for it, my earning preference is set to miles, or that the offer has expired, and none of these applies.

You can access Marriott Bonvoy here.

READ MORE: Marriott Bonvoy Bonus Points & Rate Offers

The global promo is featured on Marriott’s website and the app, but this error pops up when you try to sign up.

No. My Marriott Rewards, now Bonvoy, earning preference for 20+ years have never been anything else than points.

No. Everyone is eligible for this promotion, as it is global.

No. It is not expired.

So, the next step is to contact Marriott Bonvoy customer support. You can always call them, but I prefer having an audit trail and contact them by using the “Contact Us” form on the website.

You get a confirmation that the request has been received, but there is no immediate email from Marriott with a case number.

The customer service replied in less than 24 hours that they had signed my account for it.

The registration didn’t appear on the app immediately but was there roughly a day later.

Conclusion

It is wild that Marriott has not been able to resolve the promo registration problems that have been plaguing the program as long as we have covered them.

Customer service can sign you up, but shouldn’t this be something they should have fixed a decade+ ago? Unfortunately, someone is sleeping at the wheel at the Bonvoy HQ.

Under this campaign, members can transfer 1,000 Capital One Rewards points and receive 1,150 Lifemiles, including the transfer bonus (the 15% Bonus […]]]> Avianca Lifemiles is currently offering a 15% transfer bonus when you transfer Capital One points to the LifeMiles program through September 30, 2023.

Under this campaign, members can transfer 1,000 Capital One Rewards points and receive 1,150 Lifemiles, including the transfer bonus (the 15% Bonus will follow a short while after the transfer).

Lifemiles – over the past year or so – has started to increase their partner transfer promotions in addition to their regular mileage sales in an effort to drive revenue.

If I remember correctly this Capital One Points transfer promotion was last available in late 2021 but has now made a comeback, allowing C1 cardholders to move their loyalty currency over to Lifemiles with a (rather small) bonus.

You can access this campaign on the LifeMiles website here.

Transfer your miles from Capital One to LifeMiles, earn a 15% bonus and pack your bags for your next destinaton.

 • How can you transfer your miles to LifeMiles?
 • Log into Capital One
 • Select your eligible Capital One Venture miles credit card.
 • Click on “Redeem.”
 • Select “Convert Rewards.”
 • Select the Avianca LifeMiles option and then click “Transfer Miles.”
 • Complete the transfer and enjoy your LifeMiles.

Interestingly, this campaign is only visible on the Lifemiles website and not on the Capital One site itself where you initiate the transfer.

It’s important to have a close eye on the value of the Capital One points post-transfer. Obviously, to use the miles for anything related to merchandise shopping after transferring them to Lifemiles wouldn’t make any sense whatsoever but for flights, it does actually represent just a small extra value with the 15% bonus, so not much of an allure to speculatively transfer any points.

Redeeming for a variety of Star Alliance premium awards is still a good deal with LifeMiles, especially since miles are available through sales and other campaigns on an almost constant level.

According to the T&C LifeMiles will post the 15% bonus within 24 hours of the transfer posting to the account. This is contrary to other transfer promotions such as Amex.

Keep in mind, however, that a points transfer from Capital One (or any program, really) to LifeMiles is final, and even if your trip gets canceled by yourself or your airline, these miles will never come back to C1 but will remain with Lifemiles.

The same goes for the program blocking availability or suddenly increasing the award chart. Lifemiles has proven itself not to be the most honest and reliable program over the years.

As such, you should have a pretty good idea of what to do with these points and preferably use them immediately after initiating the transfer over to a frequent flyer program of any kind.

Conclusion

Another LifeMiles bonus, this time for Capital One Rewards Points holders, might present a good opportunity to move some points with a small bonus IF there is a feasible plan to use them up sooner rather than later.

Also, remember that Avianca itself is still under bankruptcy administration, and nobody knows what the long-term impact of these proceedings will be on LifeMiles, which could undergo rapid changes (devaluations) at any point and without notice, as we’ve seen many times in the past.

These are the Terms & Conditions for this campaign:

 • This Promotion is valid only for transfer points or miles from participating transfer partners (“LifeMiles Partners”) to miles of the LifeMiles program from September 15th, 2023 (12:00 AM GMT-6) to September 30th, 2023 (11:59 PM GMT-6).
 • A minimum transfer of 1000 points is required.
 • You must be previously registered as a LifeMiles member in order to participate in this promotion, you can sign up as a member at LifeMiles.com.
 • During the promotion period, LifeMiles members who transfer miles into their LifeMiles account will receive 15% bonus miles on each transaction. The bonus miles and the transferred miles may be reflected in the LifeMiles account statement in two different transactions.
 • LifeMiles earned by transferring and the bonus Miles earned with this promotion apply to obtain or maintain the LifeMiles Elite Status according to the rules of the Elite Program available at LifeMiles.com.
 • Transferred LifeMiles as well as the bonus miles will be accrued no later than 24 hours after the LifeMiles Partner reports the request of miles transfer.
 • LifeMiles is not responsible for miles not accrued, accrued mistakenly or accrued late due to report errors or delays from the LifeMiles Partners.
 • Once points or miles are transferred to LifeMiles, the transaction cannot be reversed.
 • Upon completion of the transfer, Terms and Conditions of the LifeMiles Program apply, available at LifeMiles.com.
 • Terms and conditions of the Capital One rewards program apply.
 • LifeMiles is a trademark of LifeMiles LTD.
