What would you do if you were staying or trying to check in to a hotel with no staff members attending guests FOR DAYS?
A reader forwarded us a link to a piece in Grman media about an ibis Budget hotel in Dortmund airport that had seen its staff walk out due to a payment dispute with its owner.
You can access ibis Budget Dortmund Airport here.
The hotel owner had contracted the front desk and other services to an outside company and had not paid their bill.
The staff had left the hotel on Saturday, and apparently, some had come to work on Wednesday.
Here’s an excerpt from the WDR:
The lights were off, the reception was unmanned: When Steven Siebert from Berlin arrived at the airport hotel, it was said to be a rather strange situation. A crowd of people was waiting for him and his work colleague in front of and in the hotel – everyone at a loss because the staff had suddenly disappeared.
” Breakfast had not been served since Saturday. The rooms had not been cleaned for three days and there was no employee on site who felt responsible in any way,” said the 28-year-old Berliner in an interview with WDR . Anyone who had a reservation couldn’t check in. Even guests who had already checked into the hotel were sometimes no longer able to get into their rooms.
” I’ve heard of people who went shopping for toilet paper themselves because there wasn’t any left in the hotel. And two guests probably slept in the lobby because they had a flight the next day and couldn’t get another hotel because of that International match.” They just had to make sure they made themselves comfortable on the benches, says Steven Siebert.
Conclusion
Not sure why the hotel’s owner had decided not to pay the staffing/management company’s bill and let the hotel stay open without any employees for days.
How often do key cards suddenly stop working (mine did several times this week), and you suddenly cannot access your room? Guests with reservations couldn’t check in. What if there had been an emergency, such as a fire, and no staff members?
It’s just an awful situation overall.
