Joe Burrow Overtakes Patrick Mahomes as Super Bowl LVII MVP Betting Favorite

  • Patrick Mahomes has dropped to second in the latest Super Bowl MVP odds boards.
  • Mahomes was a full participant at the Chiefs’ Wednesday practice after suffering a high ankle sprain last weekend,
  • Joe Burrow is now the new Super Bowl LVII MVP betting favorite at +325 odds with Mahomes next at +350.

Patrick Mahomes has declared that he is good to go for this weekend’s AFC title game.

Despite that, not everybody is convinced that he can be 100% when the Chiefs take on the Cincinnati Bengals.

Mahomes has dropped to second in the latest Super Bowl MVP odds boards at online sportsbook BetOnline. The Chiefs’ QB entered last weekend’s Divisional Round as the +300 betting favorite to win the best player award in the NFL’s title game but after suffering a high ankle sprain during their win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, the oddsmakers have demoted Mahomes.

Cincinnati Bengals QB Joe Burrow has overtaken Mahomes at the top odds the odds board, moving from an opening price of +1000 to the current +325 favorite to win the award, Meanwhile, Mahomes has dropped to second but is still just slightly behind Burrow at +350 odds, with Philadelphia Eagles QB Jale Hurts as the third favorite at +400 odds.

Burrow Now Favored to Win Super Bowl MVP Award

Different sportsbooks have different betting odds. But with Mahomes’ health a big question, Burrow has ascended to the top of the betting boards at the best NFL betting sites. The Bengals’ QB guided the team to a 27-10 upset win over the preseason Super Bowl favorites Buffalo Bills and preseason MVP favorite Josh Allen. Burrow threw for 242 yards with 1 touchdown passes as the Bengals return to the AFC title game for the second straight season.

Last year, Burrow threw for 250 yards with 2 TDs and 1 INT as the Bengals upset Mahomes and the Chiefs 27-24 in OT to represent the AFC at Super Bowl LVI. In that game, Cincinnati rallied from an early 18-point hole and a 21-10 halftime deficit to advance to their first Super Bowl appearance since 1989 while also picking up the team’s first-ever OT win in the postseason.

The Bengals led the Rams 20-13 early in the third quarter of that game and were up 20-16 at the start of the 4th quarter. However, Matthew Stafford connected on a TD pass to Cooper Kupp in the final 1:25 of the game to enable the Rams to steal victory from the Bengals. Burrow and the Bengals vowed to return to the Super Bowl this season and are one win away from doing so, and two victories from immortality.

Mahomes Playing This Weekend

There was little doubt that Patrick Mahomes would be playing this weekend. After suffering the injury in the first half of last week’s game against the Jaguars, Mahomes returned to finish the game in the second half, although it was obvious that he was not 100%. But Mahomes was a full participant in the Chiefs’ practice on Wednesday and he says that the injury is progressing well.

Kansas City opened as -2.5 favorite to beat Cincinnati in the 2023 AFC title game. But the odds quickly shifted to the Bengals’ favor after the early betting money went the Bengals’ way due to concerns about Mahomes’ healthy. Those issues have slowly dissipated as the Chiefs are back as the -1 point favorites over the Bengals in the latest BetOnline odds board as of Wednesday night. However, the Chiefs are still just third in the sportsbook’s latest Super Bowl odds board at +280 with the Eagles and Bengals ahead of them at +230 and +265.

Philadelphia Eagles QB Jalen Hurts is third at +400 despite a rather good performance against the New York Giants. Hurts has been bothered by a shoulder injury which caused him to miss games late during the regular season. The only other player with Super Bowl MVP odds better than +1000 is San Francisco 49ers QB Brock Purdy who is 7-0 SU as a starter and has thrown 16 TDs with only 3 INT since replacing an injured Jimmy Garropolo in Week 13.
