2023 Razzies Odds and Predictions

The best of the best in the film industry will be honored this weekend at the 95th Academy Awards. However, a night earlier, on March 11, the worst of the worst in film will be dishonored at the 2023 Golden Raspberry Awards. And, it’s the night of dishonor and ridicule that we will be focusing our attention on for this article.

What is a Razzie?

A Razzie Award is bestowed on the worst performances in the film industry. Formally known as the Golden Raspberry Awards, the Razzies began in the living room of publicist John J. B. Wilson in 1980.

Wilson, who at the time was working at a movie-trailer production company, was thinking about all of the bad movies he’d seen in the past year.

Ultimately, he invited around 30 co-workers and friends over for a potluck dinner and the first-ever Golden Raspberry Awards. Can’t Stop the Music, which starred the Village People, took home the inaugural Razzie for Worst Picture¹.

Razzies 2022 Winners

There were nine winners at the Razzies in 2022. Jared Leto, who is nominated for a Razzie again in 2023, was a big winner alongside Lebron James. Space Jam and Diana the Musical, for better or worse, did well at the Razzies last year².

Golden Razzie For Worst Film Odds and Prediction

The Razzie for the worst film is a head-to-head battle between Morbius and Blonde. Morbius is based on the Marvel-Verse, while Blonde is based on a fictional novel about Marilyn Monroe.

Whoever said every Marvel movie is great has not seen Morbius. Okay, they have not seen Venom, either. The 2018 Venom was widely regarded as one of the worst Marvel films ever.

Morbius has seemingly taken the honor away from Venom. Only the most diehard Marvel fans that cannot look at films objectively found Morbius to be any good.

Jared Leto’s character, Dr. Michael Morbius, has a rare blood disorder and needs to take a chance on an untested cure. In this attempt, he mixes vampire bat DNA with human blood. You can probably guess the rest.

Blonde is often referred to as a biopic of Monroe. However, it is not a true representation of her life. It is based on a fictional book that stretches the truth.

Razzie Prediction

Despite not getting Monroe’s accent right, Ana de Armas was fine in the film. She could only work with what was handed to her by director Andrew Dominik. In fact, de Armas is nominated for an Oscar³.

The scene where Monroe is having a conversation with a CGI fetus is probably what pushes voters to Blonde over Morbius. Abortion and miscarriage are the overlying theme of the movie. There is not much in the way of celebrating Monroe’s legacy.

Morbius and Blonde both deserve a Razzie for the worst film of 2022. Blonde likely has the edge at the finish line.

Razzie For Worst Actor Odds and Prediction

It is odd seeing Tom Hanks as a Razzie nomination, but fans should not get to upset. Hanks is unlikely to win. We should have a two-man race between Machine Gun Kelly and Leto.

It has been a rough year for MGK so far. Along with a potential breakup with Megan Fox, MGK is nominated for a Razzie for his terrible performance in Good Mourning.

We can only assume that MGK dragged Fox into this abomination of a movie. She might be the only redeeming feature of Good Mourning. It most certainly was not MGK or Pete Davidson.

The movie is a “stoner comedy” that feels like it is straight out of 2004. The problem is it would have been a terrible film back then, too.

This is not MGK’s first time acting, but it is not particularly a strength or what he is known for in his career. Good Mourning is the rock bottom for his acting. The same could be said for most of the actors in this film.

Razzie Prediction

Leto and MGK are both musicians turned actors. However, MGK does not have an acting resume that can compare to Leto. While Leto has been in some duds, MGK does not have as much experience in a leading role.

Both actors go through the motions in their films. Unfortunately for MGK, his no-effort performance is worse than Leto’s no-effort performance.

The voters will likely feel the same. After winning the worst supporting actor last year, Leto is saved from winning another Razzie by MGK.

Razzies For Worst Actress Odds and Prediction

Kaya Scodelario is favored to win the worst actress Razzie with -200 odds. The one questionable nominee must be Bryce Dallas Howard.

Bryce Dallas Howard in Jurassic World: Dominion is behind Scodelario on the Razzies odds at +200. There were just as bad or worse actors in Jurassic World: Dominion, but the Razzies decided to pick on her.

Chris Pratt could have easily been nominated in the worst actor category. He looked more lost than Howard in the film.

We are going to scratch her from our best pick in this category. There would have to be better value than +200 to consider her.

Alicia Silverstone might be worth considering at +550. The Clueless star took a long hiatus from acting, but has been more active recently.

If this was your first time watching Silverstone in over a decade, you would likely come to the conclusion that she fell off. Silverstone has done much better work in the past.

Razzie Prediction

James Bond star, Pierce Brosnan, stars alongside Scodelario in The King’s Daughter. The film was not bad enough to be nominated for worst film or screenplay.

However, Scodelario does not shine in her role as Marie-Joseph. Scodelario has better examples to showcase her acting skills.

Unfortunately, there is not a lot of value to be had at -200. Not when Silverstone is available on the Razzies odds at +550.

The Requin is not totally a Silverstone issue. The entire film could be nominated for a Razzie, but Silverstone does not help the cause.

Lost at sea with James Tupper does not sound bad on paper, but nothing translates to the screen, including Silverstone’s effort and the CGI. Let us take a chance on an upset with Silverstone.

Razzie For Worst Director Odds and Prediction

There is a lot of bad directing nominated for the worst director award at the 2023 Razzies. Machine Gun Kelly & Mod Sun are probably the worst, but it does not necessarily mean voters will go in that direction.

Blonde’s Andrew Dominik is favored to win the Razzie. The film could have been exceptional, but the decisions by Dominik hold it back from being a fan favorite.

There are people that enjoy Blonde and do not believe it should be getting the criticism it has received. Dominik seems to prevent it from deserving full recognition.

Ana de Armas received an Oscar nomination for her performance. While her Cuban accent looked out of place at times, de Armas did a fine job portraying Marilyn Monroe.

There is at least some direction to the film. Dominik doesn’t make the best decisions, but he at least had a vision of Monroe. Whereas, Good Mourning has absolutely no direction or cohesiveness from MGK and Mod Sun.

Razzie Prediction

Who will win and who we believe should win the worst director category is likely going to be different. Dominik was subpar in his execution, but no one knows what MGK and Mod Sun were doing.

MGK and Mod Sun have plenty of experience in the music industry, but they have some serious work to do in filmmaking. While watching Blonde and developing your own opinion is recommended, we do not subject anyone to Good Mourning.

However, picking on Dominik and Blonde is going to be a recurring theme at the Razzies in 2023. Expect Dominik to receive the nod for the worst director at the Razzies.

Razzie For Worst Supporting Actor Odds and Prediction

We are in a wild year when Tom Hanks is nominated for multiple Razzies. Not only nominations but he is favored to win the worst supporting actor for his performance in Elvis.

Austin Butler has been applauded for his portrayal of Elvis Presley in the film. However, the same cannot be said for Hanks.

Hanks plays Colonel Tom Parker, the hated and exploited manager of Elvis. There have been worst actors over the last year, but Hanks mails it in.

Fortunately, Butler had a memorable performance to carry the film. Hanks did not show up to work every day with his best effort, though.

Pete Davidson and Mod Sun deserve their nominations. But it was expected that they would be terrible. Hank’s performance was shockingly poor.

Razzie Prediction

Hanks has won two Oscars and a Golden Globe in his career⁴. He has seen the highs of a career in Hollywood, and now many would consider Elvis his lowest.

There are critics that believe his portrayal of Colonel Parker is the worst in his career⁵. For us, it was the unrealistic accent that he used in the film.

Hanks was well off from sounding like a believable Dutchman. De Arma’s Cuban accent can be forgiven in Blonde. Hanks trying to sound like a “bad guy” in Elvis, with an accent that does not come off as Dutch, is a mess.

For his awful attempt at Dutch alone, Hanks should be nominated for worst supporting actor. There were times it sounded like he was trying to speak German instead of Dutch.

Even without considering the accent, Hanks was not good in Elvis. Look for him to take home the Razzie for worst supporting actor.

Razzie For Worst Supporting Actress Odds and Prediction

The Razzie for worst supporting actress award is shaping up to be a duel between Mira Sorvino and Adria Arjona. Fans were excited to see Sorvino back on the big screen, but this was not her best performance.

Sorvino won an Oscar in 1996 for best supporting actress in Mighty Aphrodite⁶. When fans heard that she was going to be in Lamborghini, they were excited to watch the film for her.

However, oddsmakers at BetUS have inserted Sorvino as the favorite to win worst supporting actress at the Razzies. She is not an overwhelming favorite at -170 but holds a decent advantage over Arjona at +165.

Penelope Cruz is probably getting too much respect at +750. She is unlikely to win, though certainly deserves the nomination. We have her closer to +450 than her current Razzies odds.

Razzie Prediction

Everything about Morbius was terrible. It is not so much Arjona’s problem as supporting actress. She had little to work with alongside Leto, who showed up to collect a paycheck and had no intentions of being recognized favorably.

About Sorvino, she wasn’t working in a favorable environment, either. Sorvino looked rusty in her role as Annita, Ferruccio Lamborghini’s second wife. It was a stiff performance from Sorvino, but the film was not good, to begin with.

Skip taking the time to watch Lamborghini unless you are a big fan of the car brand. Instead, wait for Ferrari, which stars Adam Driver as Enzo Ferrari⁷.

Sorvino isn’t a bad actress, but she was not good in Lamborghini. Expect her to edge out Arjona for the worst supporting actress Razzie.

Razzie For Worst Prequel, Remake, Ripoff, or Sequel

Pinocchio and Blonde are favored to win in this category. We are not sure who asked for a Pinocchio remake, but it was another bad film that Tom Hanks was involved in last year.

Blonde is in this category because it is based on a novel. That is stretching it. Pinocchio is a proper remake. At any rate, there is good value on Blonde at plus money.

Razzie For Worst Screenplay

Instead of repeating ourselves, we are making the worst screenplay category a quick pick. Blonde, Good Mourning, and Morbius all have solid claims to this award. Look for another Razzie for Blonde on Saturday.

Razzie For Worst Screen Combo

Blonde is set to win plenty of Razzies in 2023. However, look for Blonde to avoid a sweep in every category it is involved in. The combo of MGK and Mod Sun in Good Mourning is too bad to ignore for the worst screen combo category.
