2023 CFL Grey Cup Odds and Predictions

2023 CFL Grey Cup Odds and Predictions

The 2023 CFL season kicked off on Thursday, June 8, and football betting sites have already listed their CFL futures odds for the 110th Grey Cup, which takes place in November in Hamilton, Ontario.

The current Grey Cup odds favor the Winnipeg Blue Bombers to avenge their loss from last season’s title game. Winnipeg fell one point short in the championship game against the Toronto Argonauts, which prevented the Blue Bombers from winning their third straight Grey Cup.

Let’s take a closer look at these Canadian Football League odds and make our predictions on who will win the 2023 Grey Cup.

2023 Grey Cup Odds

The Blue Bombers had a chance last season to become the first team in 40 years to win three consecutive Grey Cups. In the end, Winnipeg fell short, losing to Toronto 24-23.

BetUS and other top CFL betting sites have the Blue Bombers (+250) as the favorites entering the 2023 season. Despite falling short in the 109th Grey Cup, the Blue Bombers are still the best team on paper as we enter the regular season.

The BC Lions (+450) have the second-best odds of winning the Grey Cup this season. BC finished last year with a 12-6 record, which was tied for the second-most wins in the CFL.  Toronto (+500), the defending Grey Cup champions, have the third-best odds, according to BetUS.

Hamilton (+600) and Calgary (+650) round out the top five. Both teams did just enough to make the CFL Playoffs last season after finishing third in their respective decisions.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers (+250)

The Blue Bombers (+250) once again enter the CFL regular season as the favorites to hoist the Grey Cup. Winnipeg has largely dominated the league in recent years. They finished last season 15-3, by far the best record in the CFL.

A large portion of the Blue Bombers’ recent success is due to having arguably the best QB in the league. Zach Collaros racked up a league-high 37 passing TDs last year en route to his second consecutive Most Outstanding Player Award.

Collaros was also the team’s QB when they won the Grey Cup in 2019 and 2021. It is hard to bet against Winnipeg as long as Collaros is taking snaps as the starting QB. WR Dalton Schoen led the league in both receiving TDs (16) and receiving yards (1,441).

Schoen and Collaros will both be back this season, so Winnipeg should be one of the best offenses in the league once again. If the Blue Bombers want to appear in a fourth straight Grey Cup, their defense will need to be stout.

Despite having the second-fewest sacks in the league (36), the Blue Bombers still held opponents to a league-low 20.6 PPG in the regular season. They also allowed the fewest yards per game (342.9) and were tied for the fewest passing yards per game (253.6).

BC Lions (+450)

The Lions of British Columbia (+450) have the second-shortest 2023 Grey Cup odds at BetUS. BC was tied for the second-best record in the CFL last season at 12-6. They even beat the Blue Bombers in Week 18, but that was after Winnipeg locked up the division and started resting players.

BC was unable to repeat its success against Winnipeg in the Playoffs. The Lions lost 28-20 in the West Division Finals.

If the Lions want to get over the hump this season, they need a new starting QB to step up. Nathan Rourke, last season’s QB1, is no longer with the team after signing with the Jacksonville Jaguars in the NFL.

Rourke had the second-most passing TDs (25) in the CFL last season and even won the West’s Most Outstanding Canadian award.

Vernon Adams, Jr. appears to be the Lions’ answer at QB, for now. The 30-year-old QB started six games for BC last season after arriving via trade from Montreal. Dominique Davis and Dane Evans are also on the roster and could push for reps if Adams, Jr. struggles.

Toronto Argonauts (+500)

The Argonauts won their 18th Grey Cup last season, the most of any CFL franchise. Even though Toronto are the defending champions, they’re is only listed at +500 to win the Grey Cup again this season.

One factor that is certainly working in favor of Toronto repeating is that the East Division is not nearly as stacked as the West. The Argonauts have won the East in consecutive seasons, locking up the one-seed last season with just an 11-7 record. That would have been the fourth-best record in the West.

Toronto was led to its 18th Grey Cup victory last season by QB McLeod Bethel-Thompson. Bethel-Thompson led the CFL in passing yards (4,731) and had the third-most passing TDs (23).

The Argonauts will need another strong season from Bethel-Thompson if they want a successful title defense this year. They will also need WR Kurleigh Gittens, JR., who won the East’s Most Outstanding Canadian last season, to step up again as well.

Toronto’s defense was also a key part of the team’s success last season. Jamal Peters, who led the CFL in interceptions last season, has departed for the NFL. Replacing him in the secondary could be easier said than done for the defending champs.

Hamilton Tiger-Cats (+600)

Hamilton (+600) has the next-best odds to win the 2023 Grey Cup. I was surprised to see the Tiger-Cats listed this high after they finished just 8-10 last season.

On top of having a down year last year, the Tiger-Cats will have a new starting QB this season. Dane Evans was the QB1 in Hamilton last season and finished the year with 3,883 passing yards, the fourth-most in the league. Evans is now backing up Adams Jr. in BC.

With Evans off the team, the Tiger-Cats will turn to Bo Levi Mitchell this season. Hamilton traded for Mitchell in November. The veteran QB spent the first 11 seasons of his CFL career in Calgary, where he won two Grey Cups.

Mitchell may not be enough to turn around the Tiger-Cats by himself. But the Tiger-Cats still have WR Tim White, who finished last season with 1,265 receiving yards, the fourth-most in the league.

Hamilton did lose multiple WRs to free agency, including Steven Dunbar and Bralon Addison. The Tiger-Cats will need another receiver to step up and take pressure off of White if they want to find post-season success this year.

Calgary Stampeders (+650)

Rounding out the top five teams with the shortest 2023 CFL Grey Cup odds is the Calgary Stampeders (+650). As I mentioned above, Calgary lost its starting QB from last season after the team traded Bo Levi Mitchell to Hamilton.

Mitchell was benched halfway through last season for Jake Maier. Maier finished the year with 14 passing TDs, the seventh-most in the CFL last season. With a full offseason under his belt, the Stampeders appear ready to move forward with Maier as their QB1.

RB Ka’Deem Carey will also be a key part of Calgary’s success this season. Carey finished last year with 1,088 rushing yards, more than any other player in the CFL. The veteran RB also had 10 rushing TDs, the third most in the league.

2023 CFL Grey Cup Prediction

Winnipeg is the favorite and rightfully so. The Blue Bombers entered the 109th Grey Cup as a -230 favorite. The surprising loss should be all the motivation Winnipeg needs to reclaim the Grey Cup this season.

Also, the other top competitors are dealing with roster turnover at key positions. With that in mind, I will happily take the Blue Bombers at +250 in this futures wager.
