Let’s take a look at each man’s most recent fights and see how we got to this weekend’s encounter.

Vasiliy Lomachenko’s Recent Fights

In October 2020, Lomachenko was the king of the division as he had all of the gold. Unfortunately, that came to a crushing end when he lost via unanimous decision to Teofimo Lopez.

The loss was a shock to the sport and left many pundits questioning “Loma’s” ability to remain a top fighter in the division.

Since then, Lomachenko has won three straight fights, including a ninth-round TKO over Masayoshi Nakatani in June 2021, a unanimous-decision win against Richard Commey in December 2021, and a unanimous-decision victory over Jamaine Ortiz in October 2022.

Lomachenko was a large favorite in all three of those fights:

  • Loma (-1400 to -2500) vs Ortiz (+700 to +1200)
  • Loma (-800 to -1110) vs Commey (+450 to +700)
  • Loma (-1500 to -1900) vs Nakatani (+600 to +900)

It’s safe to say that the former champ has bounced back nicely with three straight victories. The Ukrainian born fighter is determined to get back to the top of the mountain and become the undisputed lightweight champion.

Devin Haney’s Recent Fights

Devin Haney has fought four times in the last two years, including two consecutive fights against George Kambosos Jr. for the undisputed lightweight championship.

In May 2021, Haney soundly defeated Jorge Linares via unanimous decision. He followed that up with a strong unanimous-decision victory over Joseph Diaz, which put him in line to face Kambosos Jr. to unite the lightweight division.

The first bout between Haney and Kambosos Jr. came in June 2022. Haney was able to win in convincing fashion with a unanimous decision that included one judge scoring the bout 118-110 for Haney. The other two judges had Haney favored 116-112.

Despite suffering the first loss of his career, Kambosos Jr. was able to get an immediate rematch. The two would fight against four months later. However, the outcome would be the same as Haney won via unanimous decision. This time the judges all agreed in the wide margin with scores of 119-109, 118-110, 118-110.

Haney was a large betting favorite in the Kambosos rematch with odds between -600 and -1100. He was the clear favorite in the three previous fights as well:

  • Haney (-160 to -205) vs Kambosos Jr. (+135 to +175)
  • Haney (-600 to -900) vs Diaz (+400 to +600)
  • Haney (-800 to -1000) vs Linares (+500 to +600)

This thrilling title fight will be a bloody chess match between two elite fighters with incredible boxing skills. The boxer that can successfully execute his gameplan will be the winner.

How Can Lomachenko Pull Off The Upset?

Lomachenko is a master of his trade. He has tremendous footwork, uses angles like an artist, and has the punching power to hurt his opponents on the inside or from a distance. Loma controls the pace of fights with his boxing acumen and experience.

For Lomachenko, he needs to rely on that excellent footwork, while doing more damage on the inside. He needs to avoid being stuck at Haney’s preferred distance and make it difficult for the champion to connect cleanly.

If Loma can land the power shots, while avoiding getting into any trouble, he has a real shot at upsetting the champ.

How Will Haney Successfully Defend His Titles?

This will be Haney’s most difficult fight of his career to date. With that said, Haney has the tools to win this contest.

The champion will have a 5 ½ inch reach advantage, which plays right into his gameplan of using the jab. This is one of his most effective tools and it will definitely come into play on Saturday night.

Another elite aspect to Haney’s fight game is his counterpunching skills. The champ is able to counter in a phone booth, while on his back foot. He does a great job at taking advantage of any mistakes or openings from his opponents.

Haney also has a high volume of punches in his fights. His speed and athleticism will make it hard for the older Lomachenko to keep up with.

Who Wins: Lomachenko or Haney?

Pace and distance will be the keys to this matchup. Haney will want a higher pace, while Lomachenko will look to keep things at a more calculated and slower rate. Additionally, Loma will want to get on the inside of Haney to avoid the jab.

Both men will study their opponents over the first two rounds and be more cautious before fully embracing their fight plans. With that said, I see this matchup being a points contest where winning the rounds are just as important as landing the power shots.

As much as I have enjoyed the brilliance of Lomachenko over the last decade, I believe it’s Haney’s time to shine. Look for the 24-year-old American to get the biggest win of his career and shoot up the pound-for-pound rankings into superstardom.

Haney vs Lomachenko Prop Bets

The following prop bets are worth considering for this world title fight:

Haney vs Lomachenko Method of Victory

  • Haney, Devin by Decision or Technical Decision (-160)
  • Haney, Devin by KO, TKO or DQ (+475)
  • Lomachenko, Vasyl by Decision or Technical Decision (+340)
  • Lomachenko, Vasyl by KO, TKO or DQ (+700)
  • Draw or Technical Draw (+1600)

This undisputed lightweight championship fight will go the full distance. I don’t see either man getting stopped. Haney has never lost in his career and both of Lomachenko’s losses have come via decision.

Four of Loma’s last five fights have gone the full 12 rounds, while Haney has gone the distance in six straight contests.

Typically, when two elite fighters meet in the middle of the ring, it becomes a war of attrition along with masterful tactics. Once again, we circle back to the description of this bout being a chess match.

With that said, the winner of this fight will come at the result of a decision. Since we’re picking Haney to win, the best option for this prop bet is the champ winning via decision at -160 odds. This option provides better value than Haney’s -250 moneyline.

The Bet
Devin Haney via decision

Over- Under 10.5 Rounds

  • Over 10.5 rounds (-700)
  • Under 10.5 rounds (+400)

There isn’t any value with the Over/Under for this world title fight. However, if you insist on taking the boxing total for this contest, then the Over is a no-brainer. As you can see above, this matchup is going the full 12 rounds. Neither man has been stopped before, and I don’t expect it to happen this weekend.

The Bet
Over 10.5 rounds

Will The Fight Go The Distance?

  • Yes (-550)
  • No (+350)

This prop bet is from Bovada and it’s clear which direction we’re going with this one. Haney vs. Lomachenko will end up going the full 12 rounds and require the judges to decide a winner.

As both men have progressed up the ladder into world title fights against elite opponents, they’ve had to win via decision instead of stoppage. Combined, these two men have gone the distance in 10 of their last 11 fights.

The Bet
Yes, the fight will go the distance
