2023 NCAA Women’s Sweet 16 Betting Odds and Predictions

NCAA Sweet 16 Womens Basketball Odds

On Friday, March 24, the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament Round of 16 will get under way. The first two rounds of tournament action have been thrilling with stellar on-court play and shocking upsets. There’s no reason to think that the Sweet 16 won’t continue the trend of compelling competition.

For the first time since 2007, the Stanford women’s basketball team will not be in the Sweet 16 after being bounced by the Ole Miss Rebels in the Round of 321. No. 1 seed, Indiana, also suffered a stunning upset before reaching the Sweet 16.

Despite some of the top seeds suffering defeats, the South Carolina Gamecocks are alive and well. They are heavily favored to win their Sweet 16 matchup and look unstoppable.

Greenville 1 Region Women’s Sweet 16 Matchups

UCLA Bruins (No. 4) vs. South Carolina Gamecocks (No. 1)

TeamSpreadMoneylineTotal
UCLA+17 (-105)+1300O 127.5 (-110)
South Carolina-17 (-115)-5000U 127.5 (-110)

The South Carolina Gamecocks are four wins away from a perfect season. They would be the first team to go undefeated since the Baylor Bears in 2012.

South Carolina has been dominant through the Second Round. Norfolk State and South Florida didn’t stand a chance against the Gamecocks.

Despite a slow start and a 16-12 deficit entering the 2nd quarter, South Carolina blew out South Florida by a score of 76-45. Zia Cooke led the Gamecocks with 21 points in the winning effort3.

That was not their best performance and they still won by more than 30 points.

If the Gamecocks came out firing from the start, we are probably talking about a 40-point win. There aren’t any deficiencies for opponents to exploit on this roster and it shows in the box score.

Overall, South Carolina is second in points against and seventh in points conceded per game. According to the Simple Rating System, which evaluates the strength of schedule and point differential of teams, South Carolina leads the country in this metric4.

UCLA might make this game interesting for a quarter. However, South Carolina will be too much to handle. Expect Cooke and Aliyah Boston to continue their dominance as the Gamecocks pick up their 36th win of the season.

Bet on South Carolina to cover the spread as their moneyline of -5000 provides no value at the top college basketball betting sites.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish (No. 3) vs. Maryland Terrapins (No. 2)

TeamSpreadMoneylineTotal
Notre Dame+5.0 (-110)+180O 137.5 (-110)
Maryland-5.0 (-110)-220U 137.5 (-110)

Expect the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and Maryland Terrapins to play a tight game down to the final seconds in the Sweet 16. Notre Dame is coming off a hard-fought defensive win over the Mississippi State Bulldogs.

Neither team could get in a groove offensively in the Second Round. Much of it had to do with Notre Dame’s defense. The Fighting Irish locked down the Bulldogs for an abysmal 29.5% field goal percentage.

Mississippi State connected on just 3 of 20 attempts from 3-point land5. No one in the starting five for the Bulldogs scored more than 8 points6.

Maryland is capable of scoring, but they do not have a physical defense like the Fighting Irish. Overall this season, Notre Dame has conceded 58.4 points per game7, as opposed to 68.5 points allowed per game for the Terrapins8.

The Terrapins have the advantage offensively, but not by a large margin. Notre Dame’s defense is a tier-up from Maryland, though.

Maryland is 13th9 and Notre Dame is 9th10 in SRS this season. Notre Dame has a slight advantage in this matchup. The edge has to be with Notre Dame advancing to the Elite 8.

Take Notre Dame to pull off the upset.

Greenville 2 Region Women’s Sweet 16 Matchups

Miami Hurricanes (No. 9) vs. Villanova Wildcats (No. 4)

TeamSpreadMoneylineTotal
Miami+3.5 (-105)+150O 130.5 (-110)
Villanova-3.5 (-115)-175U 130.5 (-110)

This is one of the unlikeliest matchups of the Sweet 16 as No. 9 seed Miami is still in the tournament following a 70-68 win over the No. 1 seeded Indiana Hoosiers.

Indiana was overrated going into the NCAAW Tournament as a No. 1 seed. That being said, it was nevertheless an impressive win for the Hurricanes. There were three separate Canes that scored at least 16 points11.

Despite going 5-7 on the road, Miami has felt at home on a neutral court in the NCAAW Tournament. They have been clutch down the stretch, with a 62-61 win over Oklahoma State before edging out Indiana.

With an overall record of 21-12, Miami was not expected to reach the Sweet 16. They had a fine campaign, but no one had them going this far. Nevertheless, the Hurricanes still have long odds of winning the NCAA Tournament.

Villanova made easy work of the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles in the Second Round. The Wildcats had an early advantage and never gave up the lead for a wire-to-wire 76-57 victory.

Since mid-February, Villanova’s only loss was against UConn in the Big East Tournament. Otherwise, they’ve been in good shape against inferior opponents.

Miami has been impressive, but getting to the Elite 8 is going to be difficult. Look for the Wildcats to stop them from going any further in the NCAA Women’s Tournament.

The Bet
VILLANOVA WILDCATS -3.5

LSU Tigers (No. 3) vs. Utah Utes (No. 2)

TeamSpreadMoneylineTotal
LSU-5 (-110)-220O 149 (-110)
Utah+5 (-110)+180U 149 (-110)

The LSU Tigers and Utah Utes is a must-watch showdown in the Sweet 16. Expect this matchup between the Tigers and Utes to be one of the most entertaining of the round.

LSU might be a No. 3 seed, but they could very well be a top seed in this tournament. The Tigers won their 31st game of the year with a 66-42 victory over a solid Michigan team in the Second Round.

Angel Reese had a monster performance to lead the Tigers into the Sweet 16. She scored 25 points and recorded a whopping 24 rebounds in the win12.

LSU has an overall record of 31-2 going into the Sweet 16. They might not be perfect, but the Tigers were only two games off from going into this matchup against Utah at 33-0.

Reese is going to be the best player on the floor in this matchup. This isn’t debatable. There is also an argument to be made that she is the most dominant player in the country.

The 6’3” forward has scored 23.8 points and a staggering 15.7 rebounds per game. She has helped lead LSU to 83.2 points per game for fifth in the NCAAW. Additionally, the Tigers are second in SRS13.

This one is going to be a battle between Reese and Alissa Pili, who has been a major contributor this season for Utah. She has recorded 21 points on 59.1% shooting and 5.6 rebounds per game14.

Utah averages 83.5 points per game, but the defense could tighten up. The Utes are third in scoring and 224th in points allowed per game. They are eighth with an SRS rating of 30.3115.

In an offensive shootout, look for LSU to ride the hot hand of Reese to the Elite 8.

The Bet
LSU TIGERS -5

Seattle 3 Region Women’s Sweet 16 Matchups

Tennessee Volunteers (No. 4) vs. Virginia Tech Hokies (No. 1)

TeamSpreadMoneylineTotal
Tennessee+1 (-110)-110O 138.5 (-110)
Virginia Tech-1 (-110)-110U 138.5 (-110)

The Tennessee Lady Vols put on a show in the Second Round against No. 12 Toledo. Behind a balanced attack from the starters and bench, Tennessee crushed Toledo for a 94-47 victory. This win followed a 93-50 drubbing of Saint Louis in the opening round.

The problem for Tennessee is that they are about to see a much bigger challenge than Saint Louis and Toledo in the Sweet 16. The Lady Vols go from the No. 13 and No. 12 seeds in the Seattle 3 Region to No. 1.

Virginia Tech brings a smothering defense with them to the Sweet 16. Following a 58-33 win in the First Round, the Hokies put the clamps on South Dakota State for a 72-60 victory.

This is one of the best defenses in women’s college basketball. The 29-4 Hokies are allowing 56.4 points per game, which is the 25th-best mark in the NCAAW. With 72.1 points scored per game, finding wins hasn’t been tough for Virginia Tech16. Overall, the Lady Vols are 235th in the NCAAW with 66.3 points allowed per game17.

Expect Tennessee to stay in this game with their scoring. However, Virginia Tech should come up with a clutch stop or two in the final minutes to preserve a victory.

The Bet
VIRGINIA TECH HOKIES -1

Ohio State Buckeyes (No. 3) vs. Connecticut Huskies (No. 2)

TeamSpreadMoneylineTotal
Ohio State+9.5 (-110)+400O 145.5 (-110)
UConn-9.5 (-110)-585U 145.5 (-110)

The Ohio State Buckeyes march on following a close call against the North Carolina Tar Heels in the Second Round. On Monday night, the Buckeyes edged out the Tar Heels for a 71-69 win.

Ohio State received a complete performance from their starting five. Four players recorded at least 14 points, as everyone chipped in to beat the Tar Heels18.

Along with their win over North Carolina, the women defeated a No. 1 seed in the Big Ten Tournament. Before getting blown out by Iowa, Ohio State dispatched Indiana by a score of 79-7519.

The Buckeyes are a team that goes all-in with their offense. They have been in several high-scoring shootouts this season. Ohio State wins games, but this is not the most well-balanced group in women’s college basketball.

Despite being eighth with 80.7 points per game, Ohio State is 275th with 68.2 points allowed per game. They own an SRS rating of 26.69 for 15th in the NCAAW20.

UConn is looking for their 12th NCAA Women’s Basketball National Championship on April 221. They are the most accomplished women’s college basketball team over the last two decades and have a really good squad this season.

The Huskies are going into the Sweet 16 with a cumulative record of 31-5. On Monday, the lady Huskies cleared Baylor for a 77-58 win in the Round of 32.

They are third in the NCAAW with an SRS of 34.67. It doesn’t get much more balanced than this UConn squad in women’s college basketball. Back the Huskies in the Sweet 16 by double digits.

The Bet
UCONN HUSKIES -9.5

Seattle 4 Region Women’s Sweet 16 Matchups

Ole Miss Rebels (No. 8) vs. Louisville Cardinals (No. 5)

TeamSpreadMoneylineTotal
Ole Miss+2.5 (-110)+125O 126.5 (-110)
Louisville-2.5 (-110)-145U 126.5 (-110)

On Sunday, the Ole Miss Rebels shocked the No. 1 seed of the Seattle 4 Region in Stanford.

Cameron Brink missed the tournament opener with an illness22. She played against Ole Miss, but it could have contributed to Stanford being off. Regardless, credit Ole Miss for stepping up to defeat Stanford in a 54-49 final.

The key for the Rebels is avoiding a letdown against Louisville. Teams either use a big win as a confidence builder, or they crash out in their next outing. We will have to see how Ole Miss handles the stunning upset.

Overall, this season, Ole Miss is 21st in the country with 56.3 points allowed per game. They have one of the better defenses, which we saw on display against Stanford. However, the Rebels have been prone to going cold from the field.

Louisville is coming off an impressive performance against Texas. In an all-around solid performance, the Cardinals pulled away for a 73-51 win. Hailey Van Lith had a big showing, as she scored 21 points for Louisville23.

This should be a close contest between Ole Miss and Louisville. It may not be the most thrilling matchup, but a competitive game. Take the points in a contest that could come down to the final shot.

The Bet
OLE MISS REBELS +2.5

Colorado Buffaloes (No. 6) vs. Iowa Hawkeyes (No. 2)

TeamSpreadMoneylineTotal
Colorado+5 (-110)+200O 145.5 (-110)
Iowa-5 (-110)-245U 145.5 (-110)

There are many people that would argue Iowa Hawkeye guard, Caitlin Clark, is the best player in the NCAAW Tournament. The 21-year-old is scoring 26.8 points and averaging 7.3 rebounds per game this season24.

She might be the best, but Clark needs more support if the Hawkeyes are going to win the NCAAW National Championship. The bench must step up and contribute.

Iowa’s reserves haven’t excelled when Clark needs a breather. In any event, Clark is fully capable of carrying Iowa over this Buffaloes squad.

The Hawkeyes lead the NCAAW with 87.4 points scored per game. There isn’t another women’s team in college basketball that can score like Iowa. They are sixth with a team SRS of 33.1625.

Iowa’s defense is going to hurt them against superior teams later in the tournament. However, Clark and Iowa should put up big numbers on Colorado.

The Bet
IOWA HAWKEYES -5
