With a spot in the World Cup quarter-finals on the line, heavy favourites Brazil will take on an upstart side from South Korea.

South Korea have already been full of stunners so far in Qatar, but taking on Brazil will represent a new level of competition. The Selecao dominated Group G action without hardly breaking a sweat, and despite some recent injury concerns within the side, star striker Neymar is keen to return to action on Monday.

South Korea enters with some worrisome injury concerns. It’s believed Hwang will miss out, a key figure in the Korean attack. Without him, look for Lee Kang-in to lead the line with Tottenham’s Son Heung-min. The latter has struggled thus far in Qatar, carrying over his dismal play in the Premier League this season. All it takes is one moment of brilliance, but breaking down this Brazilian defense will be tough to do.

Brazil will forge on without both Alex Telles and Gabriel Jesus, who are lost for the remainder of the tournament. Their depth however is impressive, and Richarlison and Eder Militao can occupy those positions with ease. This is a loaded lineup, and one that should control this match from the outset.

Brazil vs. South Korea Prediction

With dominant players across the pitch, don’t expect the Brazilians to be tripped up so early in Qatar. This remains a loaded team, with title aspirations. Despite some key injuries, the depth within the Selecao far exceeds the talent opposing them from Korea, and Brazil should control possession, and fill the net.

While the Koreans proved pesky in a match against Portugal, they weren’t facing the Portuguese side’s best talent. Brazil will represent a huge step up in class, and should control the midfield and the wide areas. Their one-touch passing should break down the Korean block in defense, and expect Casemiro, Neymar, and Richarlison to all be instrumental in ball-winning and finishing.

The Koreans are a tad banged-up entering the round of 16, and without Tottenham’s Son playing at his top level, they’re without a goal threat against this rigid Brazilian back-line. There is good reason why the Brazilians are such heavy favourites to advance and win here in Qatar, and despite a meaningless loss to Cameroon – the Selecao will rise to the occasion when the game matters most.

Expect excellent full-back play and tenacity in the midfield from the Brazilians. They’ll see upwards of 80% of the ball, and won’t allow Korea much, if any time on it. In attack, Brazil possesses a massive aerial advantage, and the pace and creativity of Raphinha and Vinicius Jr. should open up all kinds of lanes. Look for a dominating showing from the Selecao.

Brazil vs. South Korea Trends To Know:

  • The OVER is 4-3-2 in South Korea’s last 10 matches.
    .
  • Brazil is 10-0-1 in its last 11 matches.
    .
  • Brazil have scored at least 2 goals in their last 4 matches against South Korea in all competitions.
  • Brazil have won their last 4 matches against South Korea in all competitions.
  • There have been under 2.5 goals scored in 7 of Brazil’s last 8 games (FIFA World Cup).

Despite the attacking talent both sides possess, the Koreans won’t have the ball enough to take advantage of Brazil’s injuries at the back. Instead, it’ll be the Selecao who dictate the pace from the outset. Brazil will be motivated coming off of a shock defeat to Cameroon, and know they can’t take any opponent lightly. Their wide-play, pace, and passing will break down Korea – who have conceded too many expected goals to expect them to limit Brazil over 90 minutes. Backing Brazil -1.5 goals on the spread seems to be the play for Monday.
